The action followed a clash in which Mujahideen killed four army personnel including two officers. After the clash the troops wreaked havoc and fired shots and shells indiscriminately.
Dozens of people were subjected to torture. The action of Indian troops triggered vociferous demonstrations in the town and people shouting anti-India slogans took to the streets. The troops resorted to heavy lathi charge and excessive teargas shelling to break up similar protests in Baramulla town.
The occupation authorities arrested ten persons belonging to the family of a youth, Wamiq Farooq, who was martyred by Indian police personnel on January 31 at Rainawari in Srinagar. They had gathered in press colony to demand a probe into the killing of the youth.
A sit-in was staged at Pratap Park in Srinagar on the 19th anniversary of Kunanposhpora mass rape incident. It was organised by Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Societies. On February 23, 1991, Indian troops raided Kunanposhpora village and molested over 40 Kashmiri women.
